Over the last couple of years, href="http://dancingastronaut.com/tag/illenium/" >Illenium has been building a solid brand for himself in the melodic bass realm, garnering millions of plays on SoundCloud and Spotify and playing venues like Red Rocks, CO, and Webster Hall, NY. Today, February, 15, marks a significant achievement for the young Denver-based producer: the release of his debut album, Ashes.
With poignant vocals, compelling chords, and heady leads, Illenium instills a certain kind of introspective emotion with all of his music. Impassioned feelings are truly driven home in Ashes, with all of these aspects coalescing into a perfect storm of sound design and songwriting.
The tracks on Ashes fall roughly into two main categories: melodic bass and chillstep. The more relaxed side of the album, for instance, comes in the form of tracks like “I’ll Be Your Reason,” “With You (feat. Quinn XCII),” and “Without You (ft. SKYLR).” Other tracks, such as “Reverie” and “Fortress,” have his more frequent “wall of sound,” keeping the intensity high without sacrificing any emotion. However, no matter the energy level of each particular track, Illenium’s deep, driving bass and wistful leads give the entire album a seamless continuity.
